Covid-19 transforms innovation in the healthcare sector

"Digital healthcare is a new and dynamic sector. Yet, even if most of us don't realise it, the term refers to a fifty-year-old concept that has encountered a great deal of resistance to change. Back in the 1960s, when computers were as imposing as they were rare, a few healthcare professionals were already highlighting the importance of structured data in the healthcare sector. They proposed the creation of electronic medical records, the use of which remains problematic to this day. Later, with advances in telecommunications, telemedicine made its appearance, although it remained confined to exceptional situations. The boom in e-commerce marked the birth of e-health, which met with only limited success at the time. Smartphones subsequently introduced the concept of mobile health (mHealth), but few applications have been widely used. Numerous innovations in medical sensors have fuelled the development of connected health over the last ten years. Yet today, connected health is largely confined to pedometers and connected watches. The massive data, also known as Big Data, generated by connected objects and patient records has created immense opportunities for artificial intelligence, but we are still a long way from realising its full potential.

Every year in January, the press predicts that the coming year will mark the advent of digital health. In the field of health, only social networks have really spread on a large scale. Despite the billions of dollars invested in digital health, far fewer start-ups have achieved unicorn status than in other sectors. Although some healthcare systems have incorporated some of their innovations, none can claim to take full advantage of the potential of digitalization. The promise of a disruptive approach has never been enough.

Quite unexpectedly, the arrival of a microscopic virus called Covid-19 has created an inflection point that no state, company, profession or citizen has experienced before. The disruption we are currently experiencing has encouraged the emergence of new stars in the world of digital health.

At a time when physical contact still presents a risk of infection and when rapid action saves lives :

At the same time, in a globalised society where technological innovations evolve and flourish on an international scale, Covid-19 has triggered a general awareness of the importance of national sovereignty. Faced with a shortage of vital resources, citizens expect their leaders to guarantee the availability of a vaccine against Covid-19 and access to all medicines, innovative equipment and devices, as well as appropriate care.

To sum up, a number of fundamental changes have taken place in the field of healthcare in the space of just a few months. But the guiding principle remains unchanged: access to healthcare is an inalienable right. The year 2020 and beyond will present historic challenges and opportunities for the healthcare sector and its industries".
